Whether you’re a home cook eager to nourish your family or a culinary professional seeking to elevate your craft, our customizable residential internship offers an immersive journey into the world of ancestral food.

Learn everything from traditional cooking techniques like sourdough baking and fermentation to the business side of running a food operation. We’ll work with you to tailor your experience, allowing you to focus on the areas that excite you most. Whether it’s perfecting your skills in the kitchen or gaining insight into the entrepreneurial side of the food world, this program is designed to inspire and equip you with practical tools for transformation.

  • To apply, simply complete the online application form located directly on this page. Once we receive your application, we’ll get back to you within 48 hours to schedule an online interview. We can’t wait to learn more about you and help you craft your Modern Stone Age experience!

  • Interns will stay in "The Nest," a fully furnished apartment directly behind the Modern Stone Age Kitchen. The apartment features two private bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, along with a shared kitchen and living room that you’ll share with another intern. The space includes laundry facilities, all utilities, high-speed internet, a smart TV in each bedroom, and all linens. You’ll also have access to a bike for exploring the area and a YMCA membership to keep up with fitness and wellness routines.

  • The cost is $750 per week, which includes:

    • Housing in "The Nest"

    • Breakfast and lunch daily plus pizza dinner (on Fridays only)

    • 50% off additional food items from the Modern Stone Age Kitchen

    • A fully customizable learning experience tailored to your personal and professional goals

  • Your schedule will be a blend of your personal learning goals and the operational needs of our full-service restaurant and bakery. We run production from 5 am to 6 pm most days, providing ample opportunity to immerse yourself in different aspects of the operation. Together, we’ll create a schedule that balances your interests while aligning with the demands of our busy kitchen.

  • This experience is completely customizable, allowing you to focus on areas that excite you most. You’ll gain hands-on skills in sourdough baking, fermentation, cheesemaking, butchering, and more. Additionally, you can learn about inventory management, menu development, marketing, and running a food business. These skills are valuable whether you’re cooking for your family or working in the culinary industry.

  • The nearest airports are Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) and Philadelphia International (PHL). While there is no public transportation directly to us, we can arrange to pick you up from the airport if needed. Alternatively, you might consider renting a car. A car is not necessary for the internship, as everything you need is within walking distance. However, having a car is helpful if you’d like to explore the surrounding area, as we’re only an hour and a half away from Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and the beach!

  • You’ll be part of a vibrant, collaborative community passionate about reconnecting people with real food. From the kitchen to the market, every day offers a chance to learn, connect, and grow alongside like-minded individuals who share a commitment to ancestral food traditions.

  • Chestertown is a charming, walkable town with plenty to offer. Directly across the street from the Food Lab, you’ll find a fully stocked health food store and a wine and cheese shop. For those with a sweet tooth, there’s a chocolate shop right behind us. We’re also located just off the Rails-to-Trails path, perfect for biking or walking, and within two blocks of the river, where you can rent kayaks and enjoy the water.

  • No prior culinary experience is required! Our internship is designed to meet you where you are. Whether you’re a passionate home cook or a professional looking to expand your skill set, we’ll tailor the experience to your level and goals.

  • The minimum commitment for the internship is 2 weeks to ensure you have ample time to immerse yourself in all aspects of our operations and experience a full production schedule. For those looking for a longer experience, internships can last up to several months, with the possibility of an extension if mutually agreed upon. This flexibility allows us to create a timeline that aligns with your learning goals and our operational needs.
